About the Working Drawings

The U.S. Department of Agriculture program that produced the farmhouse plans in the book continues today as the Cooperative Farm Building Plan Exchange. Still centered in the agricultural and agricultural engineering departments of state universities, the program continues to make the old plans available today.

The construction drawings of most of the homes in Farmers’ Bulletin #1738 have been scanned by the North Dakota State University Extension Service and are available for you to download for free. The small-scale digital prints are direct reproductions of the original blueprints that were created in 1934. They have not been updated for modern use.

The drawings, like the floor plans in the book, should be used for conceptual purposes only.  They do not replace the need for competent professional design assistance in developing safe, legal, useful, durable and attractive homes. Layouts, room dimensions, details and construction methods shown on the 1934 drawings do not meet modern construction standards and don’t meet current building code requirements.
